Numerous times I had driven by this lovely Russian Orthodox Church in Valley Cottage. It is situated on the grounds of the Tolstoy Foundation. Each time I passed it, I promised myself I would come back one day and paint it. One summer day I did. I placed myself on the edge of the parking lot and sketched from there. Residents from the community stopped by to chat. They were friendly, hospitable and charming. Their presence seemed to symbolize the building. Although I have never been inside, the large front archway and door were inviting. The building itself had a certain simple, but charming beauty. The golden orb at the top of the cupola is a modest touch of elegance. In the painting I attempted to render those characteristics of the Church. But a building needs a voice. The friendly residents eloquently provided the words.
